Chiang Mia Treking!!!!!

Yep it's treking time!!!

Picked up from our guest house 8:30am for our two day adventure of the jungles of Chiang Mai.

First up we drove out to the markets to get the food for the next few days and then it was into the jungle for an elephant ride. Yep i know we didn't want to do this after we experienced one of the worst things ever in Vietnam, but everyone was reasuuring us that the elephants are well looked after and it isn't cruel.

So boarded the elephant we did (we also brought some bannans to feed the elephant, so we didn't feel bad about it). and it was pretty cool! The elephant driver didn't have some big metal spike to jab the elephant with. Instead he would give instructions to the elephant and the elephant would happily go along (as long as he got some bannans for it) After a brief ride through the jungle it was down to a river and this was when the ride got AWESOME! I got to sit up front and drive the elephant!!! I was a pro directing the elephant this way and that and it happily walked along the river bed........( or maybe the elephant had done this so many times and you know what they say... an elephant never forgets).

After the elephant ride it was lunch. Stopped at a local house and they cooked us up.......yep you guessed it rice and chicken.

After lunch it was trekking time. We set off with our bamboo walking sticks into the jungle and treked for about 2 hours before we stopped at a waterfall for a dip. This waterfall wasn't as massive as the one in Vietnam, but was more peacefull and secluded. Jumped in for a swim and tried to stand under opportunity. Bec got some great photos.

After our swim it was back on to the trekking trail for another 2 hours to our overnight stay in one of the hill top tribe villages. Talk about a simple life, no traffic, no pollution (no electricity, no hot water!) just perfect......Except for the bloody rooster who woke us up at 5am!!!!

Dinner was cooked by our guide and it was amazing, green curry and yep chicken and rice, but this time we also had mixed veggies, so all good.

After dinner we sat around the candle light (did you expect electricty all the way up here) and had a few drinks with our guide and a local guy. They had heaps of match stick (bamboo sticks) tricks and problem solving games. I managed to solve one, but theres was no hope with others. I think they got a kick out of tricking the westerner with their party trick, so i didn't mind them getting the better of me.

Retired to bed which was a bungleow in the mountains (1,300 feet above sea level) with a mosquito net (AWESOME) and belive it or not, but it was a pretty good nights sleep.

Next day it was breakfast around the camp fire. Bec and I even got to help cook, which was cool. Then back on the treking trail for our decent down the mountain.

After a few hours we arrived at another waterfall and once again Bec and I jumped in for a refreshing swim. After the swim it was lunch back at the house we stopped at yesterday for a noodle dish with chicken, so relief there it wasn't rice.....

Next up was bamboo rafting time down the river. Bec jumped on to the middle of the raft and i was given a big bamboo stick and told "stand at back and paddle".........first up i was a bit wobbly on my feet, but then focused my mind and tuned myself into the teaching of the karate kid and performed a bit of Daniel Son at the back of the raft.

The ride down was pretty cool , we cruised through the rapids like they weren't even there and directed the raft safely to our final stop. Where we jumped back into our jeep and headed back to our guest house in Chiang Mai.

Next up is Phuket for 5 days of total relaxation can't wait!!!

Day 19 - Siem Reap

It was an early start this morning to head out to Angkor Wat Temples. We decided it would be a good idea to watch the sunrise there and it was pretty spectacular. Would have been better if no clouds but still pretty impressive. And at that hour there were less people.

The age and history behind the temples is quite extraordinary. Really impresive as they didnt use cement. All the stones just hold together.

We looked at about 6 temples today with our guide Mr On. He is 29 and was a champ. Knew so much information (at times we werent sure what he said due to his accent, but Im sure it was something good.

We got there at about 5:30am and left around 5 so were there for a good 12 hours.

The history behind the construction was very interesting and the stories that go into the 'galleries' which are entire walls chiseled out showing Hindu and Buddist stories. Most temples had 'proection' on all 4 durections to stop bad spirits entering the massive buildings.

There is a lot of sexual meaning behind alot of the temples. They are really big on the male and female symbolic reference. Its not rude its all spiritual so very tasteful.

When entering or exiting the temples the local children are very full on and aggressive with their selling tactics. They literally follow you and walk in front of you until you buy. Lets just say I now have quite a few bracelets that were "10 only for $1..." It was really hard to say no and in the end our guide (bless his cottom socks) told them we weren interested and we already said no. After that it was a little less confronting. We wont miss this as we both find it really overwhelming.

Once again our tuk tuk driver was a champion. He basically waited on us all day then came back tonight to pick us up and take us to a restaurant with traditional dancers. After the buffet (delish) and dancing he came back and picked us up and took us home.

We are enjoying Cambodia and really sad we can only spend 3 nights here. Unfortunately we spent too much time in Vietnam so are running out of time.

We are going to head back to the temples again tomorrow to visit the outter circle of temples and hopefully catch the sunset.

Night night xoxo

Day 18 - Ho Chi Minh to Siem Reap, Cambodia

Well its official. We have lost most of our photos from the trip. Bloody computers!!

Some where along the way they have dropped off our USB.

We woke up this morning and headed back to our favourite breakfast place and had a BIG breakfast. Then we wandered around and did a bit of shopping.

We were sad to leave Vietnam but excited for the adventure ahead.

New country new experiences.

We visited the Opera House, Cathedral and People's Committee Hall.

Then we made our way to the airport to fly to Cambodia.

Flight went well and it was exciting to arrive in a new country. Visa and check in went smoothly so now we are looking forward to seeing Angkor Wat sunrise tomorrow morning with our guide/tuk tuk driver.

Day 17 - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Wow we actually slept quite well last night (very unexpectedly seeing as though it is SO noisy in HCM City).

Went out to get breakfast and found an awesome little place where we ate heaps of food and drinks for only $7.50. The unlimited complimentary iced tea was so refreshing and the food filled us to the brim. We both had omlettes which came with french fries, fruit salad (watermelon), tomato (I had Tony's), baguette.

Then we headed out for a Tony's Amazing Adventure (he was the tour guide).

First we went to the President's Independence Palace, which had a lot of history including the Saigon Government bombing it and its reconstruction to what it is now. We watched a doco on it and braced ourselves for the War Museum to come.

We thought we would have lunch before the War Museum as we were anticipating it to be pretty brutal.

We went to an 'expensive' sushi restaurant and stuffed ourselves for only $US20. Keeping in mind it is quite difficult to stuff yourself on sushi and sashimi - but we managed to do so.

After lunch we headed to the Museum and yes it lived up to our expectations. I ended up in tears and we both had to sit outside to 'have a moment' before we continued. It was heart breaking in every sense of the word. One part in particular was seeing photos of the effects of 'agent orange' and that even recently this has devastated lives through deformities, skins disease and congenital disease. One photo that effected me was the remains of a man who stepped on a land mine in 2003. Too recent to comprehend.

When we walked out it started pouring down so we headed to the Notre Dame Church. It was kind of ironic to get shelter from the church but a lot of people had the same thought. As it was raining we thought we should do what anyone in our situation would do - we went to have cocktails. After a very emotional day we thought we deserved it. They went down a treat!

Walking along the footpaths now has become even more of an obstacle than before (in previous towns). Not only do we have to dodge parked motorbikes, pedestrians, gutters that disappear, people trying to sell us everything but we now need to dodge motorbikes that simply dont want to wait for the incredible traffic. Why sit in a traffic jam with 200 other bikes when you can drive up onto the footpath and push in? :)

We should also report on the 'hairdresser' next door to our hotel. Lets just say they are dressed quite scantily and may offer more than just a hair cut. On closer looking there doesn't appear to be many hairdressing chairs in the shop and Tony has been looked up and down (and flirtatiously giggled at) on many occasions.

Tomorrow its onto Siem Reap where we fly Vietnam Airlines to check out the town and Angkor Wat. We are really looking forward to this as we have been in Vietnam for quite awhile now so excited to explore a new country.

Sleep tight xoxo

Day 16 - Easy Rider Tour Day 4

Final day on tour: mixed emotions. Happy to have time to ourselves and do what we want when we want but will also miss having our guides show us around the towns.

Woke at 4:30am to the sound of god knows what??!!?? Later found out from Hai it is the radio pumped out through loud speakers for 2 hours each morning and then again for 2 hours of an evening. We felt like we were in a concentration camp (no disrespect). Impossible to get back to sleep.

Today we drove out to get our ferry (barge to cross the river) and headed to Cu Chi Tunnel. Amazing place and really emotional with the Vietnam war history.  Explored the area and even got to crawl through one of the tunnels. Although the tunnels have been expanded to fit westerners, it was still tiny and claustrophobic. We even tasted food that they would have eaten during the war - sweet potato dipped in peanuts. It was delicious but very easy to get sick of eating repetitively. We also saw the different traps they used to kill or injure the Americans - pretty hectic stuff.

It was also interesting to know that all this was only 6kms from the American base and they would make night raids on the base then sneak back to their base in the tunnels which covered over 250kms.

We ate lunch in Cu Chi (town) - chicken and noodle for Tony and chicken and rice for me. Will definitely miss this food - and the dogs that sit at your feet waiting for scraps.

After that it was our final ride into Saigon. This was an experience and a half. Hai would speed up on the wrong side of the road to overtake about 100 bikes, then at the last minute would slip back into the traffic narrowly missing the cement road dividers. I kept squeezing my legs in close for fear of them being ripped off!! Tony's bike got hit from behind by a lady (bloody women drivers...) but it only hit his bag so no damage. At one point there was a truck fenced off on the other side of the road (it was doing road works or something) so ALL the traffic had to squeeze through on one side of the road. We are talking about at least 100 bikes plus cars all getting through a space of about 2 or 3 metres.

Finally arrived alive and gave each other high fives for surviving. Checked out our hotel that Hai and Son took us to and checked in. We will stay here for 2 nights as we want to check out the town.

I survived the whole trip without getting injured then arrived at the hotel and brushed past the motorbike exhaust pipe. Let me tell you THAT FRIGGING STINGS!!! I did the same thing in Bali a few years ago and it blew up into a massive blister. Hopefully paw paw ointment does the trick this time!!

We said good bye to Hai and Son (Hai gave us a hug - he is our favourite now as he took the time to explain a lot of things whereas Son seemed to just wanted to party and get out of the office). We went to our room and felt quite lost without them. We felt numb and sad. We had just spent 4 incredible days with them and then in a second they were gone and we will probably never see them again.

On to exploring Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). This place is 1000 times more busy than Hanoi however because the streets are wider it doesn't seem as hectic - or maybe we have just climatised to the 1000's of bikes wizzing past?

Ponts these are our guides? Were they yours?

Day 15 - Day 3 Easy Rider Tour - Waterfall - Binh Phuoc

Today was a doozer... 260km sitting on a bumpy, windy, sometimes rainy, mostly fun motorbike for over 200kms gives you a "numb bum" - as our guides keeps telling us :)

We woke up wth a dog at our door (who I think knew we were leaving as it kept whimpering - I would whimper if I was the dog too... we are pretty cool people).

Breakfast was beef and an egg served on a sizzling hot plate. With a tea (with condensed milk - Bec always eats the extra condensed milk).

We got off to an early start as we had a lot of k's to kill.

Today we saw coca, chilli plantations, cashu(?) nuts getting cracked out of their shells, rubber trees, baboo hand weaving, and alot of red dust... still getting out of places...

We rode on the Ho Chi Minh trail right up to the Cambodian border and took a happy snap. Luckily we took it quickly as 2 army guys with guns came over and told our guides we cant take photos here. Son told us sometimes they take cameras from tourists that take photos which we were SO glad they didnt as we hadnt had access to a USB yet so ALL our photos were still on the camera. The ride was quite bumpy at times as its all dirt track. We had to weave around trucks, bikes, people, pot holes and avoid the kamakaze (?) bus drivers.

We drove past a guy who had come off his motorbike (about 20 mins later an ambulance came past so hopefully he wasnt waiting that whole time). We also saw an overturned truck that Hai told us must have been carrying too much and fell over from the bumpy road.

Lunch was buffet style at a side of the road restaurant. It was delicious but Son told us we need to eat more rice and less food so we dont get hungry too soon. We were thinking "you're the one who eats the most food"... I also got told off for talking while eating... but I just thought I was doing polite dinner conversation. Vietnamese culture... they dont talk until they have finished their meal, so eat in silence, no chatting between mouthfulls.

260kms later we arrived at our hotel. Nha Nghi Hotel. The shower is awesome (although we had trouble figuring out the hot water so I went downstairs to ask while Bec hid in the closet for when they came back - so they didnt get a surprise), the room is clean, life is good.

We are off to Ho Chi Minh city tomorrow, but for now its a wander around the city to check it all out.

Day 14 - Day 2 Easy Rider Tour - Lak Lake to Trinh Nu Waterfall Resort

Wow guys. Touring about Vietnam on a motorcycle is seriously the best thing anyone can do. Dispite the horride rain which feels like needles piercing into your knees, or the gustesof wind which make you feel like you're about to be blown into the truck your about to have a head on with, its amazing. You see so much stuff that you normally wouldnt see because you're either asleep or reading a book.

Today we saw heaps and the photos will be better than words. We went on an elephant ride and it was nearly the sadest thing we have ever seen. As soon as we got on we both wanted to get off but it lasted for about 40mins. I was almost in tears and Tony pretty much just sat in silence. It started when we drove past and saw the elephants tied up with metal seats on their backs. Once we got on it all went down hill. The driver had a big stick with a metal prong on the side and everytime the elephant mucked up it got a jab. When I saw mucked up, I mean reached over and got a branch on the walk. Then we went through deep water and once again the elephant got a jab. We initally were really looking forward to it and were going to do it in Chang Mai once we got back to Thailand. Now we will not!

Apart from that we also had a great day with our tour guides as we had all warmed up to each other.

Photos are better but a few other things we saw were: curry colouring plantation, wild pigs, a traditional long house, a gorgeous waterfall (where our guide morfed into an awesome photographer).

Then we checked into our room...

Lets just say we almost put Dehli's athletes village to shame :) Ok thats probably an exaggeration, but after traveling for a bit and just wanting to have a shower to wash the red dust off... and the shower head barely lets the water past the wall... I got cranky. The room hadnt been cleaned so bin was full (dont forget we dont flush loo paper here) there were ciggie butts on the floor, the toilet was putrid and one of the instructions from the hotel was that guests were not allowed to bring prostitutes to the hotel.... well you get the picture. The funny thing was we had been told we were sleeping in a bungalow (not the bungalow we had in mind).

The highlight from this place for me was the dogs. They were adorable and LOVED the affection. One actually slept outside our room so was a lovely surprise in the morning. They even showed us the way for a walk down to another waterfall. Tony was in heaven going on an adventure with 3 dogs in tow.

Dispite all this we had a great night with our guides. Many beers were had. We learnt alot about their lives and culture.

Had an early night as we have a big day tomorrow.

Day 13 Nha Trang to Lak Lake (Day 1 Easy Rider Tour)

Today we started our Easy Rider Motorcycle tour. The morning begun with a very tired me (Bec) as the hotel we stayed at last night was so noisy. It was about 7 levels of rooms but had a stairway up the middle that allowed the noise from every level to travel up and down. Also every time the lift stopped at a level it "dinged" and we could hear it from our room!

Our 2 guides picked us up from our hotel at 8:30 and we got some piccies of 2 excited but slightly nervous potential motorcyclists. Our drivers are a laugh - Son and Hai. Son is the loud laughing one (Tony's) and Hai is his geeky side kick (mine), they are good value. They work really well together and thoroughly enjoy what they do for work. Everyday is a new adventure for them and they love packing up for 4 days and getting out of the office.

We rode for 1 minute and then had our first stop :) At a red light. Its a 200 000 dong fine in Nha Trang for going through a red light (which we found funny as EVERYONE does this in Hanoi - no fine).

Along the way we stopped at an oyster farm, a brick making factory, saw some pepper, coffee and sweet potatos plantations growing along the roadside, stopped at the top of the mountain and got some fantastic shots. We stopped for lunch at a road side restaurant (basically a shed on the side of the road). We both had chicken and rice which cost us about $2.50 combined.

Riding through the small towns was amazing. The children call out "hello" and the smiles on their faces when we wave was heart melting. You should have seen them when we gave them a thumbs up. Its was like all their christmas' had come at once (if they celebrated christmas).

Pedestrians were the least of our worries (although Hai and I almost hit an old lady). We also had to avoid cows, chickens, dogs, massive holes, pigs, and geese. By the time we hit the open road it was white knuckle time.

We have stopped at Lak Lake for the first night. It's such an awesome place to stay and get away from the cities and all the honking. Hopefully I sleep better tonight although there is a massive storm brewing. Nothing a few beers cant fix - dont worry Alexis I will always remain loyal to cider :)

Tomorrow we are going on an Elephant ride and then back on the bikes to visit more country villages as we make our way to Saigon.

This truely is the best way to travel around Vietnam. We get to see things you just dont see in the big cities and we can ask any question as we go along which helps immensely. Highly recommend easy rider - thanks Ponts and Kristy for the tip!!

Day 12 - Nha trang

We arrived in Nha Trang this morning at 11:30 to the gloriousness of pouring rain. Yes you guessed it - we arrived in Vietnams beach town and íts pissing!! the flight wasnt bad but the weather is depressing.

we head off on an easy rider motorcycle tour tomorrow for 4 days to Ho Chi Minh City so not sure when we will next blog but will have amazing stories to tell.

Internet here is SOOOO slow here so thats all for tonight.

xoxo

Day 11 - Hoi An

Last night we were awoken by a monster storm, heavy rain and wind......just the way we like it :)

Bec did her usual thing and was awake well before me, so come lunch time and she had hit the wall.

Breakfast was pretty average and we had to scoff it down as our tour bus to My Son (Mee-Sun) was arriving soon. Breakfast wasn't the usual all you can eat buffet, but instead pick an item on the menu and that's it!!! Me Omlette with Mushroom, Bec's with Ham.

Drive out to My Son was another death ride, but this time we had the added bonus of rain!!!! I swear the bus drivers over here have a death wish and enjoy playing chicken with other buses and trucks.

Finally arrived at My Son and our tour guide took us in to the ruins. First up it was an American Jeep to the top of the ruins. Yep pretty sure they are the same jeeps that was used during the Vietnam War, so it was pretty cool.

Once up at the top of the ruins our guide took us through ruins B, C, and D (Now say it with a weird Asian accient with a bad southern American twang and you have our tour guide) The ruins are amazing, but unfortunatley suffered during the Vietnam War and as a result quite a few were damaged from the American bombings. Still what was still standing was cool to check out.

We also learnt about "Linger" (a statue men worship to enhance their manhood) and i'm pleased to say that my Linger wont be running off any time soon. I did however pass up the opportunity to make my Linger bigger, but Bec tells me i'm just fine how i am and it isn't the size that matters :)

After making our way through the rest of the Ruins A, E and F in the rain, we made our way back down to where the Jeep dropped us off, for the ride back down to our waiting bus. This time in the jeep i was last in, so i had half an ass cheek on the seat and the other half sticking out of the jeep. So i had to hang on everytime we went around a corner, otherwise i would have fallen out over the cliff edge.....

Back in Hoi An and it was lunch time at our favourite restaurant and i think the family who run the restaurant have recgonised us now and are happy to see us everytime we come back. The old man even pulled out Bec's chair for her. Lunch today was Chicken Pho Noodle Soup and our favourite steamed spring rolls.

Rest of the afternoon was wondering around the town and chilling out back at our hotel.

Tomorrow we are off to Nha Trang for some beachside action, but the weather forecast doesn't look good, so we will have to wait and see. After that it's EasyRider Time for 3 days which i can't wait for.

Having problems uploading photos in Vietnam both on Blog and Facebook, so will update when we can. Till then enjoy the stories.

***Quote of Hoi An so far Vietnamise lady measuring me up for my shirt and telling me "You have belly like Budda".......Hmmm i think i need to lay off these spring rolls :)

Catch you all soon.

Day 10 - Hue to Hoi An

This morning we slept in!! 6:30am!! Record! Probably a combination of exhausion, sleeping tablets still in my system, and alcohol. We woke very refreshed, packed up and headed to breakfast. Probably the best breakfast we have had so far. Chicken (fried, boo!), little cakes (which tasted great with strawberry jam), bread, fruit (dragon fruit, passionfruit, watermelon, pineapple, bananda) ommlette, eggs, tomato and beef dish and fried rice. We had multiple servings and took bananas for later. The bananas are so great here, so creamy. Excpet also very fragile and get squashed easily in our bags.

Our bus picked us up at 8am heading to Hoi An. This bus was pretty good considering what we were on the night before when the train tracks were flooded (death ride we call it). 2 seats on either side of the aisle, air con, reclining seats, quite pleasant. Only one close call. Trucks were overtaking head on to us as a truck was pulled up in our lane. We overtook the truck and then the 2 coming towards us moved over at the last minute. We also over took a truck on a blind curve going around the corner. Luckily no one was coming the other way.

We stopped for lunch at 10:30 (very early - we werent hungry) at a restaurant with gift shop. Pretty normal now for buses to stop half way at a place they try to sell you stuff. We werent hungry so went into the gift shop. A lady followed us around everywhere we went. Tony suggested we split up to see which way she would go. She followed me, then changed her mind and followed Tony. Funny stuff until another one then followed me! Bugger!

Back on the bus.

There was a little Vietnamese boy who kept singing, crying, laughing and saying "hello" to everyone. He is so cute so no one seems to mind. If he was speaking English he would be very annoying but because we cant understand him, its cute.

We arrived in Hoi An and the bus dropped us right out the front of hotel - pleasant surprise.

This hotel is quite nice. At $15 a night including breakfast we are laughing. We have decided to stay here 2 nights as we want time to explore. Its so nice to know we dont have to pack up again in the morning. We have time to settle.

We walked into town for some lunch (chicken pho, steamed spring rolls and pork rice paper rolls we make ourselves) best lunch ever!! Accompanied of course by a local beer - which was less than 50c. Here the water is cheaper than beer which is a first because so far beer has been cheaper.

We walked around town (whilst trying to loose our stalker who had followed us into town on her bike, and then sat outside while we ate lunch and waited for us) and went into some tailors. A few hours later and not many $US we ended up getting measured for dresses and shirts (me), shirts and jackets (Tony) and some ties. We each also bought a silk sleeping bag which could prove handy while treking in Chiang Mai which set us back a whole $5 each. Alexis - I should buy a few sleeping bags and you can cut them up and make them into dresses :) Jokes - I will never ask you to sew me anything again.

We went back to hotel and borrowed complimentary bikes and rode into town to book our tour to My Son for tomorrow. This was an adventure in its self as you pretty much just do whatever you want while riding on the road. It actually ended up being easier than riding in Sydney as, like I said, you pretty much do whatever you want. Also its much slower paced so there isnt that fear of being knocked over. We wanted to ride out to the beach but thought it was getting too dark and stormy and didnt want to get stuck on the way back.

Yes you guessed it! It has been raining and raining hard! We were starting to get worried during our trip as it hadnt rained yet. We werent sure what to do or whether this could actually be our first holiday without rain. (Insert sarcasm). Its not too bad though becasue its refreshing and takes that intense heat away. Hoi An has actually been cooler than the other places we have been but that may be due to the rain.

Off for some dinner now.

Sleep tight xoxo

Hue

Spent this arvo wandering around Hue. Its more like Bali and less like Vietnam.

The crowd here is younger, hipper, and they pump the music loud. There are more people constantly approaching us on the street wishing to sell us something - postcards, posters, bookmarks, sunnies, lighters, etc. The annoying thing is they ask me to buy "only $1", I say no, so they ask Tony the same thing, he says no, so they ask me again. Then when we have walked around the block and come across them again, they ask us the same thing!! Kinda frustrating. Initially we both smiled, said no thank you and kept walking, now we have dropped the talk and just smile and shake our heads.

We had a few beers at a place a few westerners seemed to hang out at. Maybe its the comfort thing to have familiar faces around. Then we went to possiblyl the worst restaurant in Vietnam:

* After we ordered they disappeared on their motorbike for what seemed like ages. We didnt know what was going on but they must have been missing a few ingredients and had to go out to buy them.
* Then the food finally arrived and the rice paper was dried out. We were to make up rice paper rolls out selves but as the paper was not wet is was tricky.
* It was stinking hot but they only brought out a fan after we had finished our meal.
* The dessert was fairly ordinary and we were disappointed with the ice cream as it said "coconut milk ice cream" in the menu but it was only good old fashion normal milk.
* When they billed us, they added on 2 extra beers - just for good luck.

Boy when you have an AMAZING night you cant complain when other things go wrong.

Off to Hoi An tomorrow.

Day 8 and 9 - Hanoi - Hue

I woke up at 6am and couldn't get back to sleep (a regular occurance now due to noise).

We had breakfast at our hotel again (Pacific Prince) which was delicious and different to what we had been having. A sort of pad thai dish - yes Alexis I had 2 servings!!! :) - mushroom and pasta salad, eggs, cucumber and tomato, and tea and toast.

Then we headed to the water puppets show. This was amazing. Its set in an oriental theme with a big pool (representing rice paddys) in front. The puppets come out from under the water controlled by people behind the stage area (out of sight to the audience). There was a group of very young children that were there to watch and were delighted when a new puppet came out - very cute! We were amazed at how life like and how much they moved like that animal/person they were representing. We had to go to the loo after but i wasn't game due to the squat toilet and smell. Im just not ready yet. Tony went but felt sick from the smell.

We came back to the hotel so I could pee and for some time out from the streets. We both can only handle Hanoi in small quantities. I have tried to upload some video footage of the streets but it takes so long I always give up. Will post it when I get a chance.

After some reading we headed out again for some sight seeing. We walked around for about 3 hours and saw the Flag Tower, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Presedential Palace, Botanic Gardens (with about 500 brides and groom having their wedding photos taken) and the Temple of Literature.

Then we decided to have lunch and had the best meal to date! We ordered beef and seasonal vegetables, noodles and beef. It was delisious and didnt leave us feeling too full, heavy or sick - score! We then headed back to hotel checked out but left luggage then until we were ready to go to over night train.

We wandered around the lake and just people watched. We had chikcen pho for dinner and was the best $2.50 we spent.

We then went to the train station to wait for our train. We got there at 8pm and our train departed at 11pm. It was a long wait and my head was playing up due to the heat and tiredness. But we got through it. We had a random scammer come up to ask asking to see our tickets and Tony said no. Scammers!

We boarded the train and thought we were in for an easy trip to Hue.

I thought it would be a good idea to take a sleeping tablet so I could sleep through the trip seeing as we were due at Hue at 8am. BIG MISTAKE!

At 4:45am we were all woken and told to get off the train as the flooding had covered the train tracks and we had to get a bus. We werent told thiseasily of course but everyone got off the train and waited around who knows where! Yep right about now that sleeping tablet was the worst thing ever! By the way thanks Emma it really was good having it for previous travels :) Please thank your mum as well!

So for what felt like forever we waited and I sat there almost hullusinating as my body still should have been asleep. Tony thought this would be the moment I cracked and said "ive had enough we are flying to Phuket for the rest of the trip". But no. I knew it was only temporary so pushed through and before we knew it we were on a bus travelling again. Broken English and hand signals allowed us to now find out what was happening.

The bus trip was a ride from hell and we saw our lives flash before our eyes twice. First 1 everyone deadset thought we were going to crash, but at the very last minute the bus did a massive swerve and just missed the oncoming truck by cms. Its like they play chicken with each other or something? We finally arrived at the train station so the train could take us the rest of the way. We werent sure where we were, but it was somewhere between Hanoi and Dong Hoi? We jumped on and continued our journey.

We are staying in Hue tonight at Sports Bar Hotel - Tony's pick but unfortunately for him there are no TVs so not quite sure where the sport comes into it :) - and then will get a bus to Hoi An tomorrow for 2 days on the beach.

The weather has been so hot I have been drinking (and ejoying beer) yes thats right I will now be coming home with a beer belly :)

The flooding hasnt affected us (except of course the train) and we weren't too sure where it was. We are both really well and thoroughly enjoying ourselves and dont want to come home.

Love to all

P.S Happy 1 week and 2 day wedding anniversary :)

Halong Bay Days 5 - 7

Hello everyone!! We are back in Hanoi after 3 glorious days in Halong Bay.

We woke up Thursday morning had some breakkie then were picked up by our tour guide Nam (as he told us Nam like Vietnam). The drive out to Halong Bay was insane with trucks over tkaing trucks and then a bus overtaking both trucks. I think we both put our feet through the floor on the breaks about 100 times praying it was going to stop - and of course it always did.

Also found out how our beef got delivered - yep on the back of a motorbike. Drove past the guy with a dead cow on the back of his bike, head flapping one side, tail and legs on the other - unfortunately we didnt get a photo of this :(

Arrived in Halong Bay a bit after mid day and it was straight onto the boat. Our boat was called Amigo and our room was extremely tiny but nice. The shower was above the toilet and we had to take turns standing next to the bed to get changed etc as there wasnt enough room for 2.

Sailed out into Halong Bay to some caves called "Surprising Caves". The reason its called surprising could  be because each cave is surprisingly bigger than the last, or due to the fact that one of the limestone is shaped like a guy who is very "happy".

We then jumped into a kayak and paddled around investigating some of the 2000 islands in Halong Bay. Truly breath taking. Back on the boat for a seafood dinner - squid, prawns, whole fish, chicken rice, the works! Sensational stuff (except the prawns for Tony). We are actually surprised at how much fried food they eat! We thought we would be having more rice paper rolls and lighter meals but they crumb and fry just about everything.

After dinner we had cocktails and relaxed on the top of the boat on sun beds. It was a bit over cast but the almost full moon was out with a few stars to light the night sky.

Retired to our (tiny) cabin and drifted off to sleep with the gentle rocking of the boat.

The second day was as good as the first. We said to Cat Ba Island (the biggest in Halong Bay). Our tour group is a mixed bunch including Spanish (loud), American, English, Polish and a French couple who we have spent most of the time with. Their English is not too good and our french is terrible so we generally play charades when trying to talk - makes life fun :)

We arrived at Cat Ba Island and spent about an hour cycling through the villages. This is what I thought the trip would be like - getting up and close with locals and seeing how they live. It mkaes you wonder why we need such materialistis things and that we could go home and sell all our stuff and (shock horror) still survive. We stopped for a break and a cool drink (the humiditiy here is intense) and found out these people only got electricity 1 year ago.

We made our way back down the mountain (on our rusty, break failing bikes). Then had lunch - today it was fish, prawns, chips( they love their french fries too), spring rolls, chicken, rice and some fish dish that was wrapped around lemon grass sticks (Alexis I will be getting you the recipe so you can make it for us!)

After lunch we arrived at Monkey Island for a very welcomed swim and some monkey action (well action with monkey's as that sort of came out wrong). The monkeys come right up to you and grab food, sunnies or what ever you have in your hands. We saw one monley up a palm tree with some boardies on its head  - feel sorry for whomever it took them from.

From here we said good bye to our tour group and they were going to sleep in a hotel on Cat Ba IOsland whereas we chose to sleep on the boat again. We got on a mini bus and travelled (very quickly) across to the other side of the island where our next goupd were waiting for us. The bus had a MASSIVE crack in the front window!! Who knows how that happened? See photo on facebook.

Unfortunately dinner was the exact same thing as last night (as most people generally dont sleep 2 nights on the boat - but we figured we can stay in hotels whenever we want but dont always have the opportuinity to sleep on a boat) even down to pineapple spring roll light and the amazing swan carved out of tomato. We met 2 Irish travellers who were coming to the end of their trip. We spent the night drinking and laughing and had a great time with them. In Tony's travels he has found Irish and Canadians are great to get along with and these guys didnt disappoint.

We woke up and had another peaceful day cruising back to Halong Bay city.

Two quotes of the boat trip that we will always remember -
1) "Slapper" when being told what the fish "Snapper" was when put in front of us.
2) Me asking the French couple if they had been to Hanoi (which is where we were all picked up from) - their blank look back at me, probably thinking stupid Australians!!

We arrived back at Hanoi tired, hot and not looking forward to the hustle and bustle compared to thew gloriousness of Halong Bay. We checked in, showered, changed, booked our train for tomorrow, then checked emails, and organised clothes washing. Then we headed out to book tickets to the water puppets and will see it tomorrow morning at 9:30.

We went to get dinner and thought we would try our luck at an alley way of food shops we had stumbled across when we were here (before we went to Halong Bay) instead of an expensive $3 restaurant - yes thats expensive here!! We picked one and sat down and the guy brought us a menu. We chose chicken and mushroom soup, honey chicken, spring rolls each (as the waiter held up 1 finger so we thought it meant 1 spring roll per serve) and 2 beers. When the spring rolls arrived they were a whole plate each - about 15 rolls per plate. We laughed at us stupid tourists and by the end of it almost ate all of them. A quick walk back via buying big bottles of water and we were back to our room, our sactuary with only the noise of horns coming from outside but we were safe and quiet again - ahhh bliss.

So far Tony hasn't quite managed to get the idea of NOT PUTTING HIS TOOTHBRUSH UNDER THE TAP, as every time he goes to brush his teeth I hear the fmailar "damn it!" I cant wait to be able to flush look paper.

We are now going to head to Hue on an over night train that leaves at 7pm and arrives at 7am. We wont have internet access so dont miss us too much.

Hanoi Day 4

Thís morning started at 4:45am when our alarm went off (or 3am when we both woke afraid of sleeping in) our breakfast box arrived at 5am (coffee in a can, orange juice, 2 crossants, danishes, apple and a ham and cheese sambo with the crusts cut off) our butler took our bag at 5:20am and we were off in a taxi.

It was a much quicker taxi trip back to the airport than arriving, but unfortunately still in darkness. We checked in, but got a shock as there were some concerns with tony's arrival date on visa letter.

Flight smelled like a toilet at a music festival, but was so smooth take off and landing all was forgiven. We were even served a snack for a 1 hour flight.

Arrived at Bangkok and re-checked baggage. Vísa letter approved!!! Phew! Unfortunately we had suncream and moisturiser in hand luggage and was taken off us.

Had coffee while waiting for flight. BEST COFFEE EVER! Played "Guess what country they're from".

Arrived at Hanoi quickly through the Visa process. Had to wait FOREVER at the baggage collection. After waiting awhile, we sat down at the carosel so did a local - knowing smile to one another - thís is going to take awhile.

Oh my gosh Hanoi ís insane!! It is exactly how people describe it. Hot, people approach offering taxi lift (one guy then got shoved out of airport by security. They tail gate, drive in middle of 2 lanes, use their horns as indicators, and just drive how ever and where ever they want - just no aggression. We dont even know which is the correct side of the road to drive on anymore.

After dumping our bags at our hotel we wandered dowwn to a recommended travel company and booked our junk boat tour. SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT!

Continued wandering the streets, risking our lives crossing the road. Dont worry mum we are ok but wait till you see our footage of the streets. Its hectic to say the least. You have to just start crossing and continue - commit or get hit.

We found a little food stall on the street that cooks your food on a grill on the side of the road. We had different skewers of meat. We think it was chicken, beef and pork but cant be too sure :) We also ventured into the unknown - with some whole bird creature. Bec jumped straight in, chewing away, and didnt realise until after that she was trying to suck meat out of a birds head. Lets hope she keeps it down while typing this. Wash it all down with a Bier Ha Noi, and sat back and watched the potential carnage on the streets.

Phuket day 3

Ok before I recap day 3, ill just write a bit about dinner last night. "Into the Thai" was the name of restaurant but it was more like "Into the Fire" in my mouth! I learnt very quickly that "not too spicy" for the locals, is SUPER HOT!! Bec enjoyed the show as I sweated it up big time and cried over my dinner.

Relaxation... we successfully did nothing. Woke up to another day of paradise with my amazing wife - god I love calling her that. We started the day with our traditional coffee in our pool, while deciding what to do first. Finally made our way to breakfast and took the locals advice and fell into "slow life".

For breakfast this morning our favourites were homemade chicken sausages, fresh guava and mango juice, waffles with golden syrup and raspberry jam, and cinnimon french toast.

Bec finally agreed with me that it was actually bees flying around the fruit and not flies, and received a comedy show of me trying to get fruit whilst avoiding getting stung - funny stuff she tells me!

After breakfast we heading to the Infinity Pool which looks out over the ocean to clear blue water. We pretty much spent the day there reading in the pool, then on our sun beds while sipping cocktails. As time didnt exist it meant lunch was when we felt hungry, so by 3 pm it was time for lunch. This time my mouth had an easy time as we asked for mild chicken curry, and stir fried beef and basil WITHOUT chilli! So we managed to appreciate the food.

All thats left now is to finish the cocktail, maybe have another = total relaxation.

We head to Hanoi tomorrow and then its off to Halong Bay to sleep on a junk boat for 2 nights. Sailing amongst the lime stone peaks that are scattered throughout the bay.

Will get some photos up soon

xoxo

Phuket

Mr and Mrs Henderson checking in...

Perfection - married life is all that plus more!! Woke to an amazing day, a beautiful wife, and paradise. It was a slow start to the day, but that's the pace we love. Breakfast was delicious - a wide variety of choices from around the world. Fresh fruit, bacon and eggs, danishes, cereal, sushi - you name it - they had it. We of course gorged and then took some muffins with us for later.

The view from the restaurant looks out over the ocean (we can't upload photos here but will endeavour to do so in the coming days) and the gentle breeze is just enough to cool you down as the heat is intense.

After a brief exploration of the resort (as it was too dark last night), its back to our private pool to unwind, relax and cool down - not that life is stressful - but because thats what you do.

It was then off to Bon Island - Evason's private island - on a long tail boat. Bon Island is exactly what we imagined New Caledonia to be like. Beautiful white sandy beach, and crystal clear water. All we were missing was the cocktail by the beach.

My beautiful wife sits peacefully down by the water edge. Time to join her and experience more of this amazing island.

We got back to the resoort and its CODE PAW PAW CREAM all through our bag :)

We have arrived!!

We have arrived!!! It has been the longest day of our lives but we are finally in Phuket!!!

Our morning started at 3am when we got up for our airport transfer. Howard (our driver) was quite an interesting character and we got out of the bus knowing a fair bit about his wife, his step son and himself - way too much info actually. He actually was so carried away with his stories that he took a wrong turn and then couldn't reverse the trailor out. So Tony and another passenger had to get out and literally pick up the trailor to rotate it - keep in mind this was 3:30 in the morning.

We then got our flight to Brisbane no sweat. Then Bec thought it would be a brilliant idea to check how much money she had in her account and forgot to take the debit card out of the ATM. I can tell you some choice words were said as I thought I had lost my card all together and we hadn't even left the country. It all turned out fine as a lady had found the card and handed it into lost property.

Our flight to Phuket was delayed for 4 hours but we have now arrived safe and sound and have checked into our AMAZING resort for the next 3 nights (thanks Bec1!!). This place is superb and we cant wait to see it in day light tomorrow - believe me there will be photos!!

Once again thanks to all who celebrated our wedding with us yesterday!! It was the best day of our lives and we loved every minute of it. We wanted to wake up this morning and do it all again - it was soooo much fun.

We are staying at here - Evason Six Senses Resort, Phuket, for the next 3 nights so will upload some photos to get you all jealous.

We dont have a phone so please email us as we have internet access while staying here.

Love you all and take care.
